1. epsNet Annual Conference: Budapest: 16-17 June 2006: Europe in Context: Debating the Project
Call for Papers
This is a general call for papers for the next epsNet Plenary Conference, to take place at the Central European University, Budapest, on 16 -17 June 2006. The conference Academic Convenors, Laszlo Bruszt (EUI, Florence & CEU, Budapest), Carlos Closa (Centre of Political and Constitutional Studies, Madrid), and Neil Collins (University of Cork, Ireland) welcome proposals for papers on themes relating to any of the workshops set out below. Papers proposals of up to 300 words should be sent by not later than 7 April 2006, by email to chair@epsnet.org
Researching Europe
Workshop 1: What International Role for Europe?
Chair: Andrew Cottey (University College Cork)
This workshop will explore the nature and direction of Europe's international role of Europe, focusing on the EU. It will address the EU's role both in the wider Europe and globally, and in the security, economic and other spheres. In particular, the workshop will seek to address how far and in what ways the EU is a new type of international actor and the implications of this for international order. Papers on all aspects of Europe and the EU's international role are welcomed
Workshop 2: The Future of the EU Constitution
Chair: Carlos Closa Montero (Centro de Estudios Políticos y Constitucionales, Madrid)
The 'No' votes in the referendums in France and the Netherlands have raised doubts about the possibility of a successful ratification of the EU Constitution. However, the process has continued and, so far, 14 member states have ratified it. Moreover, the process has not been officially closed. Against this background, the Workshop seeks to explore the options for ratification: Does the constitution need to be changed? What explains the negative outcomes in two referendums? What are the implications for the future of the EU? Papers from different theoretical approaches are welcome
Workshop 3: The State of the Art of Political Science in Western Europe
Chair: Radoslaw Markowski (Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw)
This session will bring together substantive expertise on the theoretical understanding of debates and methodologies in political science in Western Europe. Papers are invited which address the continuing debate on the notion of an European political science.
Workshop 4: The Europeanisation of National Systems
Chair: (Lenka Rovná, Charles University, Prague)
This workshop focuses on the consequences of Europeanisation of national administrative and political thinking, the growing influence of European treaties as well as EU directives and case law.
Workshop 5: Political Parties and the EU
Chair: Zsolt Enyedi (Central European University, Budapest)
Political parties and the EU European integration represents an increasingly significant environment for national politics. The relations of parties to the state and to society, the relations among parties, and the internal balance of power within the parties may be shaped by the actors and processes that exist at the level of European Union. The session will investigate the existence or non-existence of the influence of European arena on national party politics. Comparative papers and case studies (focusing on old, new and non-members) are equally welcome.
Workshop 6: Democracy and the Citizen in Europe
Chair: Lori Thorlakson (University of Nottingham)
European integration has resulted in a supranational political system that presents both the opportunities of new channels of access and the challenges of increased complexity and scale in governance. This workshop broadly examines the changing role of the citizen in a democratic Europe. This could include issues of transparency, consent, legitimacy, political participation or democratic linkage. Both empirical and theoretical papers that address these topics are welcome.
Researchers, Teaching and the Profession in Europe
Workshop 7: Teaching Europe: What and Where is Europe Today?
Chair: Cirila Toplak (University of Ljubljana)
This workshop will review trends in European higher education and discuss possible effects for teaching political science.
Workshop 8: Political Science Doctoral Studies and Students in Europe
Chairs: Pere Villanova: (University of Barcelona) and Irina Kolotouchkina (Sciences Po, Paris)
This session seeks to explore several crucial issues concerning PhD programmes, PhD students and researchers, and related issues within the context of the European context, both at the general level and the academic level. What is being a PhD student within political science today in Europe? The main challenges and problems met by PhD in political science in different EU countries?
Workshop 9: Quality of Teaching
Chair (Erkki Berndtson, University of Helsinki)
As the epsNet/University of Helsinki Project on the Quality of Teaching nears completion, this workshop particularly welcomes papers which discuss innovations in high-quality teaching of political science, as well as those discussing pedagogic issues surrounding the evaluation of teaching quality in political science.
Workshop 10: Politics Students: Work Experience and Employment Prospects
Chair: Fiona Buckley (University College, Cork)
The demand for undergraduate work experience has gained momentum in recent years. Work experience is seen as an important bridge between theory and practice. It enables students to develop and practise skills, identify their career objectives and develop contacts with people who can help them decide how to get the type of employment they seek. This session will attempt to quantify the usefulness and importance of work experience in political science. In particular, the session will examine the relation between work experience and the employment prospects of political science students. Papers are welcomed from experiences in all sub-fields of the discipline.
Workshop 11: Women in the Profession
It is now five years since the first epsNet (European Thematic Network) Report on women in the political science profession. That Report concluded that not only were women under-represented, but that academia is a conservative actor, slow to change. At the same time, in many European countries, more women than men are now entering universities as students of political science. This Workshop welcomes papers which describe develops in the profession over the last five years.
Workshop 12: European Accreditation System in Political Science
Chair: Jadwiga Koralewicz (Polish Academy of Sciences, Collegium Civitas, Warsaw)
A forum to discuss the particulars of an accreditation system appropriate for political science. Contributions are invited which consider the arguments for and against a system for accreditation of political science courses in Europe, as well as accounts of current national practice.
Workshop 13: How to Get Published in English
Chair: Bob Reinalda (Radboud University Nijmegen)
This workshop discusses the opportunities for, and impediments to, getting published in political science, in particular in English. Both journal and book publications will be discussed. Steven Kennedy of Palgrave Macmillan will illustrate how his publishing house works and give advice. Those who would like to send in a paper about publication opportunities or difficulties are invited to do so.
A detailed and separate call is available for the “3rd epsNet Workshop and Training for First-time University Teachers” of the EpsNet Conference at http://www.fses.uniba.sk/staff/gregusova/English/doc/Cal_%20for_papers_Budapest06.doc (For more information, please consult: http://www.fses.uniba.sk/staff/gregusova/English/index.htm )
