1. Third International Political Marketing Conference, School of Business,
Cyprus College, Cyprus
April 6-8, 2006
The increasing significance of political marketing has fueled rapid growth
in research at the intersection of marketing, communication, political
and culture disciplines. The concept of culture is becoming among the most
important in the Political Marketing field, but its meaning, articulation,
space, and means of examination remain contested. Interestingly, over the
past decade scholars have been confronted with, and become aware of, new
political marketing discourses or/and narratives for capturing culturally
(transnational, cross-cultural and intercultural networks) embedded knowledge.
Across all levels, interpretations and applications of culture from a political
marketing perspective lead to new conceptual patterns of political strategies
as well as to the emergence of the cultural knowledge management in the
development of political campaigns.
In order to illustrate these accounts, the 3rd International Political
Marketing Conference 2006 draws from a broad variety of sources/disciplines
related to political marketing and, thus, encouraging an interdisciplinary
discussion. It broadens and reinvigorates the entire subject area at the
stroke; it develops a bold new way of framing the field of political marketing
that focuses on how cultural patterns, genres and formats can be transformed
into organizational knowledge of political marketplace
As the 3rd International Political Marketing Conference 2006 is sponsored
by the refereed Journal of Political Marketing, the internationally leading
academic political marketing publication, the conference also offers publication
opportunity for participants. Selected papers will be peer reviewed for
publication in a special edition of the Journal of Political Marketing.

2. The Concept of War, International Conference, Vancouver, Canada
September 7-10, 2006
Has our understanding of the phenomenon of war changed of recent? Should
we attempt to explore new ways of conceptualizing, theorizing, and synthesizing?
Evidently, certain discontinuities mark the era that has followed the end
of the Cold War: So-called humanitarian interventions have been multiplying;
the considerable widening of the concept of security gave rise to the dissemination
of the notion of war, which now embraces as heterogeneous discourse fields
as preemptive war, terrorism, war on drugs, wars of civilizations, and
post-national war, to mention just a few; furthermore, the ruptures are
manifest in the Western world’s novel military technology, which has spurred
the professionalisation of the military and – as a corollary – the fading
away of the republican ideal of the soldier-citizen, whereas mass war is
still prevailing in the Third World; the unipolar and hegemonic world order
seems to facilitate the emergence of new armed conflicts; the spreading
and putting into practice of the neo-liberal ideology has caused the partial
privatization of war, stretching from subcontracting of non-combatant tasks
by private firms to the “new mercenaries” and introducing a new articulation
of the relationship among public power, political legitimacy, and (material
and human) cost extrernalisation. At the same time, in the periphery of the
world system, neo-patrimonialism and clientlism are increasingly gaining
ground through the violent rent seeking appropriations by warlords and local
militias (e.g. in the gold or diamond mines, narcotics, etc.); wars linked
to ethnic or religious identities are burgeoning; the proliferation of peace
keeping missions leads to the “gendarmisation” of the military; the nuclear
strategies, which have been predominant during the Cold War, appear to have
been relegated to second stage.
The main objective of this conference is not just to chronicle the situation
and bring out new streams of reflection within the three disciplines of
political science, philosophy, and law. More importantly, the ultimate goal
is to compare the disciplinary perspectives, and, to the extent possible, “crossbreed” them. Faced with the considerable impending challenges of the
phenomenon of war, disciplinary compartmentalization proves, indeed, unproductive.
Working languages of the conference are English and French
Deadline: Written papers must be submitted only via email and no later
than June 30, 2006. Applicants are invited to submit a paper proposal,
including paper title and a substantial abstract to the following address:
vancouver2006@googlemail.com. As the meeting will focus on the conceptualization
and theorization, essentially empirical paper proposals will not be considered.

3. “Ripple Effects” of the European Project, 10th Annual Graduate
Student Conference, Georgetown University, Washington DC, USA
February 10-12, 2006
The EU, in its unique attempt at supranational governance, has had wide-ranging
effects not only on its member states, but also on global actors outside
the EU, among them individual nation-states, transnational corporations,
and NGOs. The 10th Annual CGES Graduate Conference is an opportunity for
Masters and Doctoral candidates from the humanities and social sciences to
explore the many "ripple effects" the European project has had on global
interaction and exchange.
The Conference is multidisciplinary in nature, generally with one panel
from each of four disciplines: History, Cultural Studies, Political Science
and Economics. Abstracts might consider addressing the following issues:
- Antecedents of responses to EU policies and institutions
- Cultural challenges and effects of the European integration project
- Political consequences of the EU on domestic actors
- Questioning the neo-liberal economic trend in Europe and its effects
At the close of the conference, two papers will be selected to receive
'Best Paper' awards on the basis of their academic quality, as judged by
the panel commentators. Selected papers will each receive a $250 award.
Abstract Submission Deadline: November 15, 2005
Abstracts should be 300-500 words (1-1.5 pages) in length and will be
accepted only via email; please include a CV with your submission. Participation
is limited to Master’s and Doctoral students currently enrolled in degree-granting
programs. A limited number of travel grants are available.

7. Jewish Space in Central and Eastern Europe: Day-to-Day History,
Vilnius, Lithuania
May 8-9, 2006
The organizers of the conference perceive Jewish space as diverse forms
of life and relations developing in the rich context of urbanism, social
life, economic expression, and coexistence with the non-Jewish world. Having
undergone various transformations, the Jewish space has preserved its authenticity
and individuality. The organizers of the conference are interested in the
distinction of the Jewish space, its representation in everyday life, and
the communication with non-Jewish environment. The reports presenting the
following sections of Jewish space are welcome: “Regular” and “unusual”
Jewish space: town (Jewish street, Jewish quarter, ghetto); shtetl; village;
agricultural settlement; grange. Types of community (kahal, lesser kahal

8. Approaching European History from Southeast European Perspectives:
Comparing Social Movements and Social Change in the 19th and 20th Centuries,
Bochum, Germany
January 25-27, 2007
The workshop aims at contributing to a renewed reflection on such long-established
mental maps which, over the last decade, have indeed been re-designed to
approach Western and Eastern Europe, but have, at the same time, mostly
marginalized the Southeast. By taking up issues crucial for Southeast European
history and comparing them to structures and agencies in the rest of Europe,
the conference thus focuses on a rather neglected geographical (and mental)
angle. The workshop hopes to attract the interest of scholars working on
social movements and/or social change in all European spaces and (not necessarily)
in a comparative manner. In the ideal case, proposals will prove apt to
be combined into comparable topical and methodological clusters, leading
to panels fruitfully juxtaposing, e.g. national identity constructions in
Germany, Serbia, Italy, and Greece, religious contest in Bulgaria, Sweden,
Bosnia and Prussia, migratory processes in Saloniki, Amsterdam, Istanbul
and Marseille.

9. Popular Opposition to, and Support for, Different Types of Integration
into the European Union among the New Member States of Central and Eastern
Europe, Prague, Czech Republic
The workshop aims to identify institutions and social groups that strongly
support moves toward a more intense European integration, as well as those
being indifferent or even seeking to minimise the impact of membership.
Their attitudes may stimulate or impede the integration of the new member
states in the enlarged European Union.
The emphasis of this workshop is on the attitudes of non-elites toward
economic and political leaders who favour or oppose different degrees of
integration, or alternative scenarios (i.e. to move towards an ’Atlanticist’
or ‘Eastward looking’ model).
Papers addressed to the general main topic and to the following proposed
sessions are invited.
It is intended to publish the proceedings of the conference and final
papers should be at a stage requiring relatively little revision.
Deadline: Abstracts for presentations (not more than 500 words)
should be submitted for review by October 31, 2005 by email attachment
to lumir.gatnar@soc.cas.cz.
Abstracts will be refereed and contributors will be notified as to whether
their abstracts have been accepted by the 30th November 2005.
Date of receipt of completed papers by the organizer: January 20, 2006.
Updated programme information will be available on http://www.soc.cas.cz in the Social Structure
Studies department section (the pages are being transformed into new editing
system during September 2005).
Presenters will be provided accommodation (two nights), lunches and refreshments
during the breaks, and the conference dinner on Friday.
Contingent contribution towards travel expenses is dependent of further
fund raising.
Application is invited for a limited number of places from non-presenting
participants at a charge of EURO 40 (students 20) which will include attendance
at the conference, lunches and refreshments during breaks.
