EPSNet workshop for young University teachers
Friday 18 June: 09:00 - 12:00
Coordinator:
Gabriela
Gregušová
During annual conference in Prague in June 2004, PhD students can receive
training in how to teach their graduate students better. They can also meet
other doctoral members of EPSNet and discuss their experiences of the education
of undergraduate students in political science. They can talk about the problems
they face, and discuss different approaches, purposes or motivation of their
students.
The workshop will be in two parts. During the first part, all interested PhD
members of EPSNet present at the conference can hear lectures of three experienced
University teachers: Miroslav Marcelli (Comenius University Bratislava), Lori
Thorlakson (University of Nottingham) and Jan Vihan (Charles University Prague).
The workshop will continue with the discussions in two groups for those participants
who receive a scholarship from EPSNet. The workshop will take part on the first
day of the Prague conference so that the participants may continue discussions
next day if they so wish.
Topics of the workshop
The workshop will be focused
on several key problems young university teachers struggle with:
- Course
structure: How to elaborate a good structure
of a course?
- Motivation
of students: How to make students more active?
- Critical
thinking: How to make students to think
critically?
- Argumentation:
How to reach a scholar level of the discussion
during the lesson?
- Essay
writing: How to teach students to write a
good essay?
- Originality:
Which unusual activities could make a course
more interesting and what is more could bring
extra knowledge
and experience
to the
students?
- Synergy:
How to make students to accept different opinions
of other colleagues and to
synergize them?
- Respect:
How to receive acceptation as a teacher?
Publication
from the workshop
One of the outputs of the workshop shall be a volume with papers of L.
Thorlakson, M. Marcelli and J. Vihan, with most notable essays of PhD participants
and with conclusions of the workshop. It shall be published as a hardcopy
and at the EPSNet web page as well. So Ph.D. students could use better the
information and experience of their colleagues during their daily praxis
at the University.
All the doctoral students
participating in the Conference, who are teaching and interested
in the discussed subjects, are invited to participate.
