C4 The EU Policy Process: European Institutions and Domestic Politics

Chair: (to be announced)

The European Union has evolved dramatically since the 1950s so that it is now often considered as a system of governance or a polity in its own right, rather than merely as a novel kind of international organisation or regime. The European Union has now become so entwined with domestic politics as to make the untangling or separation of the ‘European’ from the ‘national’ or ‘subnational’ almost unthinkable for most of the ‘older’ member states. This has led to a new field of study: that of the ‘Europeanization’ of domestic politics. This panel welcomes papers on the relationship between European and domestic politics, with a particular focus on the EU’s policy process. Papers are encouraged where they examine specific policies at EU and domestic level in one or more member state, so as allow for an examination of the kinds of effects and change mechanisms that have resulted from EU membership.
