C3 European Economic Governance
Chair: Joern-Carsten Gotwald (University of Cork)
The creation of the Single European Market has led to the introduction of new forms, contents and instruments in European policy making. This multi-level system of governance is pushing for a convergence of national policy-making and national institutional frameworks alike. At the same time, however, persisting path-dependencies clearly influence economic development within the member states. While some observers interpret the rise of the regulatory state in Europe as a clear victory for neo-liberal ideologies, others point to a return of the state and to specific national arrangements in economic policy-making. This panel will address the issues arising from the introduction of the multi-level European governance on existing (national) frameworks. This panel actively encourages proposals dealing with issues of economic governance in Europe from a cross-sectoral and/or cross-national comparative perspective and/or discuss European developments in an international context.
